Kosher CandyWe guarantee that all products bearing our McJak brand name are kosher; we have all of our products certified kosher by Rabbi Aryeh Spero, author of the book A Guide to Nikkur and administrator of Quality Kosher Supervision in Canton, Ohio.

What exactly does it mean that our products are kosher? The Hebrew word “kasher,” or “kosher” in English, means “proper” or “acceptable.” Foods are considered “kosher” when they meet the specific standards and regulations set by the Jewish Halakhic laws. Halakhic laws, which are derived from the Torah, the laws instituted by rabbis, and from long-standing customs, include rules and practices that affect every aspect of life, from what you do when you wake up in the morning to what you can and cannot eat, who you can marry, and perhaps most important, how to treat God, other people, and animals.

Certifying that a particular food is kosher involves thoroughly examining each certified food item’s ingredients, as well as the manner in which each item is manufactured, in order to ensure that it complies with kosher law. Among the requirements of kosher law are the following:
  • Kosher food products must be made ONLY with utensils that have been used to produce other kosher foods.
  • Kosher food products must contain ONLY ingredients from certified kosher sources.
  • Kosher food products must NOT contain any products from non-kosher animals. Mammals are considered kosher if they both chew their cud and have cloven hooves; mammals that demonstrate only one of these characteristics, such as camels and pigs, are considered non-kosher. Fish are considered kosher if they have either scales or fins. Additionally, it is common to consume only birds that have a clear tradition of being kosher, such as domestic fowl.
  • Perhaps the best known application of kosher law is that requiring the complete separation of meat and dairy products, both in preparation and in consumption. Kosher meat items cannot contain any dairy components, and kosher dairy items cannot contain any meat.
In order for an organization’s food products to be considered officially kosher, a Rabbinic Authority (like Rabbi Spero of Quality Kosher Supervision) must approve as kosher the ingredients of the items, the manufacturing process undergone by the items, and the facility in which the items are manufactured. The contract specifies the acceptable ingredients and processes that can be used in manufacturing the organization’s products, and it also states that the organization receiving certification agrees to periodic unannounced inspections.
